Making a sign and leaving a baked goody for the sanitation workers and postmen and women when they visit your house. Shipping is otherwise $6.45, so it makes sense to add a $5 item and get free shipping! It's okay, really. But over the past three Christmases we have found a rhythm to Advent that works for our family. Post shared on Ann's Walk with Him Wednesdays. Traci, I LOVE the mason jar ideas too!!! My favorite resource for book lists, including Christmas books, is Sarah Mackenzies website, Read-Aloud Revival. Then I usually read the story from Unwrapping the Greatest Giftalthough, sometimes Lilly asks to read it, sometimes Mark reads it (Emma is our quiet soul who is perfectly fine just listening to others read)but usually I get to read it (which is totally fine by me, I love it so much). The Jesse Tree tradition is new to me. During the holidays, Voskamp's writings are a reminder that celebrating the birth of Christ points us to remember the death of our Savior. I like how Mark Buchanan describes liturgy in his book, The Rest of God, and I can really relate to the church experiences he describes at the beginning here:(I highly recommend reading this entire book, by the wayI am only giving a little excerpt here, but the whole thing is so so so good). I'll admit, we are clumsy and imperfect, inconsistent and just a plain mess some daysand Im sure we dont do it the right way (is there even such a thing as the right way?). and we will pick 5 happy recipients of The Cradle to the Cross Advent Wreath along with the new Messiah Manger engraved with Emmanuel because when our holidays are about staying in the story, being with Him we reclaim the wonder. Each Sunday in December, I read my devotional and lit a candle on my new Advent wreath. Our Jesse Tree:We use just a small, slender tree that sits in the corner of our dining room for our Jesse Tree, but you could use just about anything as a tree for Advent. We began by using a portion of sales to support sponsored children through Compassion International, and then we fully supported a Compassion maternity centre in Haiti and more than 20 some mothers and their babies, which I visited in person with my Mom when I was 16 years old. We have so many Advent resources I hope I find time to do all of them! I had a full-tuition scholarship to university and never finished. Just ordered the Nativity! The wreath is 0.75 inches high, and weighs 1 pound, 7.6 ounces in total. It reflects my patience for Christmas Day and more importantly Jesus second coming. Included are discussion points to talk about the story further and even more ideas if you want to extend that days lesson. If you need an Advent devotional, Anne Voskamp has written a lovely Jesse Tree Book which can be used for daily readings. What a gift, to get to be a gift! My mom got my daughter the Fisher Price nativity set this year .,, she already has fun playing with it (shes 2). Then Mark reads from the Bible, the verses that tell the story that we are focusing on that night.
