Benjamin Mee Fri 17 Sep 2010 19.03 EDT W hen my wife died at the age of 40 from a brain tumour in 2007, I remember going in a daze to the council offices with my four-year-old daughter to register . Maybe I was too frank about it. This piece was first published in March 2012, to coincide with the release of the film We Bought a Zoo. Mee: Ooh, yeah. 6. It was a case of palliative care.. Together, they take on the challenge of repairing the zoo to reopen it for public with the help of the head keeper Kelly Foster. Financially, things are infinitely better than they were, Benjamin tells me. But the script, by Aline Brosh McKenna ( 27 Dresses and Morning Glory ) and Crowe . It was quite hard work you know. But did you know that the film is based on a real story? It's just been kind of transplanted to sunny California [from England], because I think the thinking was more people would want to see it. Not long after the Benjamin's father died, and his mother decided to sell her house and buy another property in which she and other family members could live together. I was just about to say all of the nice things about Matt Damon that I thought, and then they just cut and moved on to something else. It all started with Benjamins wife, Katherine Mee. Hes part of an endangered species breeding programme, too. He suddenly calls out, Hello baby, looking up at Chincha, a jaguar who came to Devon from France a year ago, now busy washing his paws. Im thinking this is so not going to work but we did. Katherine passed away on March 31 2007, after a heartbreaking period of increasing illness. And I thought, well, I've got a load of things to say about this, and I was just about to launch into my spiel, and I just looked at him and said, "Ha!" Then I saw my favourite picture of her on the wall. It is a really odd dynamic and I found about three or four guys, not personal experience, but I put some feelers out, who said exactly the same thing. Im so proud of them. Kelly Foster is a renowned American journalist currently working as NBC15's Morning anchor. The stories you care about, delivered daily. Thats a total sad reality. Once grand, it was now in desperate need of repair. Stevens explains that if they want the house, then they must also buy the zoo on the property which closed several years before. With no experience, limited time and a shoestring budget, Mee sets out with the support of his family and the local community to reopen the zoo. It is nice going around with those guys [his kids] because they see things and say we should do that. I dont underestimate the weirdness of it and how its going to be for me sitting and seeing that film about that bit of my life, which again has been changed and dramatized.
